Chapter 14
STAVROK
I looked over the perfectly set table. The candles were in place, and all the silverware was laid out precisely.
Normally, I didnât care about such things, but now...
Now I had someone to impress.
The double doors at the other end of the dining room opened a crack, and I straightened my spine, hands behind my back. I had elected to wear a simple navy shirt and slacks for tonightâs meal: a nice halfway point between my training gear and the formalwear my advisors forced me into for diplomatic visits.
The door slid open, and Lucy slipped into the room. My heart lightened upon seeing her. She wore a simple low-necked dress, and her long hair flowed loose around her shoulders.
It was thrilling to see her embrace the fashions of the land so readily. She already looked like she belonged here. She looked like a queen.
My queen.
Her lips quirked upwards when she caught my eye, and she hurried over to meet me.
âYour Majesty,â she said, giving me a small curtsey and giggling in a way that made me smile.
âMy queen,â I replied, giving her a bow in turn.
She scrunched up her face and waved away my remark, but she accepted the chair I pulled out for her without fuss. The woman was a conundrum. A delightful puzzle that I couldnât wait to spend the rest of my life figuring out.
Our food was brought in, and we began to eat in a comfortable silence. I surveyed her over the top of my wineglass, smiling at the way she flushed when she caught my eyes on her.
âThis color suits you.â I stroked a hand along her ruby red sleeve. âYou should order more styles in this palette. You make a pleasing picture.â
âIs that so?â she said, raising an eyebrow at me, but I could tell she wasnât angry at my remark.
On the contrary, she looked strangely shy. As if she wasnât used to men complimenting her in this way. I couldnât fathom the motivations of human men. To me, she was a feast for the eyes.
âI trust your day was pleasing?â I said, taking a bite of tender lamb shank and eyeing her.
She nodded. âYour cousinâs fun.â
âCass.â I smiled warmly. âIâm glad you like her. Sheâs like a little sister to meâtalkative, and always underfoot, but she means well. I hope she showed you all this place has to offer.â
âShe did.â Lucy met my gaze, her tone careful. âI got the works.â
âGood.â I clinked my glass against hers. I wasnât hiding the fact that I wanted her to stay with me, after all. âDid you find the computer you requested?â
âI did, thank you.â She cast her eyes downward, fiddling with her dessert fork. âIâve tied up all the loose ends. So, Iâm all yoursââ
I grinned at her, and she snorted.
âFor now.â She pointed her fork at me, before taking another bite of lamb and groaning. âGod, the food here is amazing.â
âCare to join me for dessert?â I said, lowering my voice a shade.
She held my gaze.
